Report on the Visit of Dr. Lorna Moxham

Dr. Lorna Moxham, Faculty of Nursing, University of Wollongong, Australia, and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE, along with Mr. Paul Robson (Psychiatric Nurse Clinical Specialist) and Ms. Taylor Yousiph (PhD Scholar and Associate Lecturer, University of Wollongong, Australia), visited MCON from 7th to 17th March 2025.
On 8th March, the team participated in the International Women’s Day celebrations held at KMC Greens, Manipal, between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
A meeting with the Dean, Associate Dean, Heads of Department, Professors, and Pillar Heads was organized in the workshop room on the 5th floor of MCON on 10th March between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM. During the forenoon, the team visited the Anatomy Museum and interacted with the Director of the International Office, MAHE, which was coordinated by Dr. Savitha, Assistant Professor (Senior Scale), Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON.
In the afternoon (2:00 PM to 3:30 PM), a session on Clinical Management of Aggression and Agitation was conducted for the faculty of the Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, I Year MSc Nursing students, II MSc Nursing specialty students, and PhD scholars in the I MSc Nursing classroom. This was coordinated by Ms. Flavia Noronha, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON.
Later in the day, between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM, an interactive session with the Head of Psychiatry, KMC, Manipal, was held and coordinated by Dr. Binil, Head of the Department, Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, Manipal.
On 11th March, a community mental health home visit was organized in the Havanje and Neelavar area from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM with the Mental Health team. The visiting team highly appreciated this collaborative activity. That afternoon (3:30 PM to 5:00 PM), they interacted with Dr. Subha Sooriya, HNS, KH, and visited the Psychiatry and Emergency wards of Kasturba Hospital. This visit focused on patient care and was coordinated by Ms. Flavia Noronha and Ms. Asha K Nayak, faculty members of the Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, Manipal.
On 12th March, a session on Recovery Camp: A Psychosocial Intervention for People with Mental Illness was conducted for Mental Health team members at the Hombelaku Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, KMC, Manipal, between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM. This was coordinated by Mr. Renjulal Y., Assistant Professor (Senior Scale), Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON. Following the session, the team visited the Health Science Library at KMC.
Later that day, between 10:30 AM and 12:00 Noon, a session on Psychiatric Emergencies was conducted for MSc Nursing specialty students, MCON and MSON faculty, and PhD scholars in the II Floor Seminar Room, MCON. Dr. Lorna Moxham, Mr. Paul Robson, and Ms. Taylor shared their perspectives on the topic based on the Australian context.
From 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, a workshop on Hearing Voices was conducted for the Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing faculty, MSc Nursing specialty students, II PBBSc Nursing students, and PhD scholars in the workshop room, 5th floor of MCON. This workshop was highly appreciated by the students.
On 13th March, the team participated in a workshop on Innovative Teaching Methods for Next-Gen Learners organized by I MSc Nursing students of MCON at the Interact Hall, KMC, between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM.
At 10:30 AM, Dr. Lorna Moxham led a session on Stereotypes and Assumptions in Nursing: A Critical Self-Reflection for I PBBSc Nursing students in the II MSc Nursing classroom, MCON. This session was coordinated by Dr. Savitha, Assistant Professor (Senior Scale), Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON.
That afternoon, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, a session on Mental Health Assessment: Use of the MSE was organized for the faculty of the Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, PhD scholars, and II MSc Nursing specialty students in the I MSc Nursing classroom on the 4th floor of MCON. Mr. Renjulal Y., Assistant Professor (Senior Scale), Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, coordinated this session.
On 14th March, the team visited the Department of Ayurveda, Siddha, and Yoga, which was well appreciated. Following the visit, an interactive session on Conducting Case Study Research with People Who Have Lived Experience of Suicide was held for MCON and MSON faculty in the II Floor Seminar Room, MCON, between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM. Both activities were coordinated by Ms. Prathibha Lydia Braggs, Lecturer, Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON.
A meeting to discuss collaborative research, publication, and student–faculty exchange programs was held later, attended by Dr. Binil and Ms. Asha K Nayak. In the afternoon, an interactive session on Doctoral Research in Nursing: International Insights and Methodological Dialogues was organized for PhD scholars in the II Floor Conference Room, MCON.
Cultural visits to Malpe Beach, Sea Walk, Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi, Perampalli Church, and Babbu Swamy Kola near MIT were arranged. The visiting team also experienced Ashlesha Bali Pooja and the traditional Indian Tulunaadu culture during their stay.
Students, faculty, and other health team members widely appreciated the sessions and activities, fostering collaboration, innovation, and global perspectives in mental health nursing. The visit was aligned with sustainable development goals, emphasizing good health and well-being, quality education, and partnerships for goals. The program was coordinated by Ms. Asha K Nayak, Department of Psychiatric (Mental Health) Nursing, MCON, MAHE.
